SOME BASICS ABOUT COVERED BRIDGES

A covered bridge is made up of trusses. A truss is a wooden structure made up of triangles. Here is an example of the simplest form of a truss, called a kingpost truss.

The truss has a bottom chord and a top chord.

The bottom chord is held by the truss.
The top chord stabilizes the truss and helps to transfer the weight of the bridge.

An improvement to the kingpost truss was the queenpost truss.
The queenpost truss allowed for longer bridges.

Another way to make bridges longer is by having multiple kingposts, as seen here.

Or by having a combination of queenposts and kingposts, seen here.

Another very popular and successful design was the plank-lattice truss.

The plank-lattice truss allowed for even longer bridges.
